Abstract:
The degree of polarization of an arbitrary quantum state describing a transverse electromagnetic field can be defined as the distance between this state and the set of all quantum unpolarized states. We propose a new definition for the degree of polarization in terms of the quantum Chernoff bound. We apply the new definition to compute the degree of polarization of some particular quantized field states.
