Abstract:
The westerly flow variability and blocking are very important for generation of regional weather anomalies. In this paper, blocking as a potential generator of extreme weather in Europe is investigated. The Molteni-Tibaldi blocking index is applied to analyze daily geopotential height at 500hPa from 2000 to 2005, using fields of the NCEP/NCAR reanalysis data. The analysis is performed separately for winter (DJF), spring (MAM), summer (JJA) and autumn (SON). The time series of blocking index reveal high seasonal variability and negatively correlation to the NAO index time series. The results show that blocking events appear mostly during weak NAO (North Atlantic Oscillation) periods and the regional blocking circulation is directed by the large scale circulation.
