Abstract:
From the first International Biophysics Congress (Stockholm, 1961) till present (the future International Biophysics Congress will take place at Montpellier, 2005) the research trends in biophysics were continuously changed, but some of them remained as a permanent challenge for the scientists. Thus, the detailed 3D structure of macromolecules of biological interest (i.e. proteins, nucleic acids) was the favourite topic of biophysics. Consequently, this topic pressure stimulated the design and development of very subtle and powerful techniques to investigate the 3D structure of biomolecules (e.g. X-ray diffraction on macromolecular crystals, NMR of the macromolecules in solutions, single molecule techniques). Another favourite subject was the study of energy transfer and transduction in biological systems and coupling with different biological functions (e.g. nervous impulse propagation, muscle contraction, bioluminescence, photosynthesis, active transport through cellular membranes). At last but not least, we shall mention specific biological interactions (e.g. enzyme-substrate, antigen-antibody, hormone-receptor, signal molecules-membrane receptors) that are capital for the correct functioning, repairing and the maintenance of the living cells. The present work will present and emphasize some of the main current topics approached by prestigious research laboratories pertaining both to the universities as well as to different research and industry companies involved in the development of new efficient and non-pollutant technologies, conceived to replace the old energy consuming and non-ecological ones.
