Abstract:
Precision measurements in high energy physics require the inclusion of higher-order corrections and a consistent framework for the renormalization of physical parameters of the underlying theory. Here we consider the on-shell renormalization of the parameters needed to describe the mixing of neutrino flavors, as measured in neutrino oscillation experiments. We base our calculations on generic interactions terms and we consider the possibilities that neutrinos are either of Dirac or of Majorana type. A particular problem is the appearance of absorptive parts in self energy corrections. This makes it difficult to reconcile the requirements of finiteness, gauge invariance and unitarity of the mixing matrix. As an example we investigate how the decay rate of a heavy neutrino in the seesaw model will be affected by renormalization.
