Abstract: The knowledge of the air masses characteristics is very important in weather forecast. There are a lot of methods to determine the type of air mass. Some of them include the optical properties of the aerosols and the cloudiness. The aim of this work is to use the turbidity to characterize the air mass and the type of the clouds. Turbidity is computed using optical properties of the aerosol determined from nephelometer measurements, which provide the backscattering coefficients for tree wavelengths. The variation of the cloudiness related to turbidity shows the properties of the air mass. This synergy allows us to characterize the local air mass. We have chosen the days with clear sky and the overcast days. The state of the atmosphere for these days was analyzed using the data from nephelometer and data from ceilometer. The results showed a good correlation between the optical characteristics of the atmospheric aerosol and clouds cover and in the same time that the turbidity is a conservative parameter for air mass. The HYSPLIT software was used to confirm the character of air mass.
