Abstract:
Gamma-ray measurements is a common method used in radiation environmental monitoring worldwide. Differences in reference sample and bulk samples involve differences on detection efficiency and correction factors should be applied. Self-absorption in the sample depends on a number of factors including sample composition, density, sample size and gamma-ray energy. Measurements of relative photon transmission through both reference and unknown bulk sample allow to estimate the degree of absorption by the sample and to improve measurement data assessment. Self-absorption correction factors have been calculated for soil, grass and liquid sources with different densities and geometries.
