Abstract:
Be7 is a radioactive nuclide produced in the atmosphere by cosmic radiation. Quickly after formation this nucleus are attached to submicron aerosol particles. Be7 is used as a natural tracer in the study of some atmospheric processes and in the study of aerosols dynamics in the atmosphere. The main wash-out mechanism of Be7 from troposphere is the wet deposition of aerosol particles at ground level. This paper presents the correlation between the ground level concentration of Be7 and precipitation. The correlation was calculated for 26 stations distributed on American and Australian continent. The values of correlation coefficients are negative for all stations and all seasons. Significant values of the correlation were obtained for equatorial and tropical regions, where the amount of precipitation is significant, and for the seasons with large amounts of precipitation. In conclusion, Be7 is a useful natural tracer for the study of wet deposition and of precipitation.
