Abstract: This work describes the set-up of an experimental system for micro-tomography developed at University of Pisa. The purpose of this imaging system is to perform a high spatial resolution analysis of small animals. The main components of the micro-CT scanner consist of the CCD detector, the rotation stage, the translation stage, the shutter, the X-ray tube and all the afferent electronics. The X-ray tube is made by Hamamatsu with the product name 60KVMFX. The detector is a 1536(H) ×128(W) CCD coupled to a non-segmented scintillator, also made by Hamamatsu, with the product name S7199. In this set-up, the object is physically moved with respect to the source and the detector. The rotation is obtained by means of a rotation stage based on a step-by-step motor.
Different phantoms were used to have a quantitative evaluation of the performance of the apparatus. Different peak voltage and filtering were used to find the minimum absorbed dose in order to optimize the image acquisition. Our tomograph for small animals is now complete and its functioning has been studied and characterized.
