Abstract:
We present a technique to reconstruct the primary energy of cosmic rays from the measured charged particle density in extensive air showers as recorded with the KASCADE-Grande detector. KASCADE-Grande is a complex detector array hosted by the KIT Campus Nord, Karlsruhe, Germany (110 m a.s.l.). The particular case of charged particle density at 500 m from shower core is investigated as it has been shown that in the particular case of KASCADE-Grande this observable is independent of the primary mass and maps the primary energy. Additionally to the reconstructed primary energy spectrum we present an evaluation of uncertainties affecting the result and also a comparison with the result of another independent reconstruction procedure (based on the size of the charged particles, combined with the ratio between charged particle and muon sizes) applied for the same recorded shower sample. We apply a method to compensate for the effects of statistical fluctuations on the spectral index of the reconstructed energy spectrum.
