Abstract:
We propose a one-dimensional highly versatile electro-optically induced waveguide and discuss some of its applications in optical processing. The device consists of a reversed bias p-i-n InP/In1-sGasAstP1-t/InP structure on which an array of independently contacted stripe electrodes is deposited. Since the refractive index of the structure beneath the electrodes modifies with the applied electric field, it is possible to implement waveguides with an arbitrary refractive index profile by appropriately biasing the stripe electrodes. Moreover, the refractive index profile can be reconfigured with a high speed. This device can act also as a beam shaper or as a variable fractional Fourier transformer, having thus important applications in optical processing and optical tomography. Some non-guiding applications based on a specific refractive index patterning normal to the light propagation direction, as phase modulation or beam steering, can also be implemented with this device.
