Abstract:
The interference fringes, which appear when two coherent beams of charged particles are superimposed after propagating along different paths, are shifted when the charged particles are subject to a non-vanishing magnetic vector potential even when no force acts upon the particles. This shift of the interference fringes, proportional to the magnetic flux enclosed by the interfering beams, is a manifestation of the Aharonov-Bohm effect. The paper demonstrates that a similar Aharonov-Bohm effect exists when the interference occurs in the momentum space and not in the coordinate space. The result is by no means trivial since even the existence of quantum interference in the coordinate space does not imply the existence of interference in the momentum space and vice-versa. More precisely, interference in momentum space has been experimentally evidenced even for spatially separated coherent beams. Set-ups that can be used to demonstrate the existence of the Aharonov-Bohm effect in the momentum space for either free or ballistic electrons are proposed.
