Abstract: Two high efficiency Ge detectors have been acquired recently by the Nuclear Physics Department of the Faculty of Physics – University of Bucharest, one p-type with a relative efficiency of 70% at E = 1332 keV, and one n-type with a relative efficiency of 47% at the same energy.
In order to set up the system for the gamma ray measurements, after installing the software, calibration in various geometries was carried out.
The large number of sample configurations with different geometries and compositions that are expected to be assessed with the two gamma spectrometers requires a comprehensive calibration procedure. A specific difficulty for these very efficient detectors is the high rate of coincidence summing effects for which corrections are needed. For those reasons, a strictly experimental calibration is obviously impossible, and the only way to obtain relevant results is to combine experimental calibration with mathematical simulation of the processes. This is why the Gespecor program was used for that purpose.
Stability of the system was tested before performing several background measurements; proceeding to the first application with those systems followed. This application consisted of low-background spectra analysis for samples from the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant that were measured.
