Abstract:
The magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) is a versatile and powerful tool for the magnetic characterization of very thin films and multilayers with important technological applications. The paper reports on the main advantages of the MOKE magnetometry as compared to conventional magnetometry and offers a didactical perspective on the origin of the magneto-optic effects, by starting from the classical explanation of the Faraday effect. The microscopic origin is also mentioned as well as a brief description of the macroscopic formalism. Different experimental configurations are discussed. Finally, the working principles and a detailed explanation of a Faraday cell based MOKE magnetometer is presented. The performances and the capabilities of the mentioned device are exemplified in case of different magnetic thin films and multilayers with transition metals.
