Abstract:
Due to its achievements, nuclear physics is more and more present in the life of every member of the society. Its applications in the medical field and in nuclear energetic, as well as the advanced research, always pushing the limits of science, are subjects frequently present in the media. In addition to their invaluable benefits, these achievements imply also particular risks. These risks are also mentioned by the media. Specialists in nuclear physics do not hide these risks; on the contrary, they analyze and evaluate in order to finally establish the means of reducing them at insignificant levels. The development of a subfield (“Radioprotection”) which handles the defining of norms and requirements for “assuring the radiological safety of the workers, population and environment”, and the dynamics of this new field are proof of this attitude. The improvement of the formal and informal education of the population regarding the real risks of these applications is very important in order to understand and better assimilate some general rules concerning the use of these techniques, as well as for the correct perception of these, leading to an increase in the interest shown towards nuclear physics. This educational update can be inserted even in elementary school, in adapted forms. The task of informing the general public is to be carried out mainly by specialists who, unlike 30-40 years ago, can rely on a much more efficient generation of communications`equipment.
