Abstract: Modern science teaching pedagogy pays nowadays more and more attention to the way students evolve from their initial state of knowledge and understanding to the desired level of science comprehension. Studies show that students learn best if they are engaged in active learning. The National College “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” in Galati has a team of science teachers involved in developing interactive teaching methods, centered on students needs. The paper presents a project involving a group of 11-th graders, specialized in math and science, interest in “hands-on” activities and very eager to try something new. The project is a joint educational venture between our College and the Center for Science Education and Training, which support science education through experiment. Our study introduces the use of modern/ sophisticate equipment and the information technology in order to analyze the environment changes produced by urban artificial light, during night. This phenomenon, called light pollution is due to an inadequate utilization of artificial light sources in street lighting. The paper is based on measurements we carried out during last year in our home city – Galati. In addition to the evaluation of the light pollution we assessed also the emission spectra of different light used in street lighting, based on the data acquired with an optical fibre mini educational spectrometer.
