Abstract:
Fluorescence spectroscopy can provide an excellent tool to characterize the water quality on the basis of fluorescence properties of dissolved organic matter. Specific fluorescence fingerprints of Romanian surface water (river and sea) were evidenced using different spectroscopic techniques: emission spectroscopy, synchronous fluorescence scanning (SFS), excitation emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (EEMS) and laser induced fluorescence. Some similar features observed for water samples collected from Constanta harbor were present in highly polluted Arges River, deriving from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons contamination. Different types of oil products were detected as pollutants in river and seawater. The influence of the evacuated waste water from urban areas and nearby farms was put into evidence by protein-like fluorescence presence (tyrosine and tryptophan-like). The decreasing of high pollution due to the self purification process along the river basin was also evidenced. Distilled water, tap water, river water and marine water were compared.
