Abstract:
A few among the most destructive events that occurred in the Vrancea region before modern instrumental monitoring are investigated. The selected historical events (11 June 1738, 26 October 1802 and 25 January 1838) are characterized in the current Romanian catalogue (ROMPLUS) by magnitudes greater than 7.5 producing extreme damage over extended areas in Romania and neighborhood. A comprehensive search for contemporary or compiled historical sources was made in order to quantify the related ground motion effects. Integrating this information and performing comparative analysis among the study events we critically revised the catalogue parameters and discuss the implications on intensity scale calibration for Vrancea events and on seismic hazard assessment.
