Abstract: Fe and Cu atomic emission spectra as obtained by using the same spectrometer provided with both dc/ac ark and spark sources were recorded by Kodak no.1 photographic plates and 2048 pixel/mm Hamamatsu CCD. In this way it was possible to compare the performances of both detectors and excitation sources regarding final emission spectra. Accordingly, the arc spectra were significantly superior to spark concerning sensitivity while the spark spectra evidenced themselves by a smaller number of lines.
In this way, both sources are complementary: to detect elements of moderate concentrations (tens too hundred of ppm), the spark sources are more suitable while in the case of trace elements (ppms and less), dc/ac ark sources are the best choice.
The same results helped us to establish that in both cases the background noise directly correlates with the wavelength (red noise) while spark spectra showed a better reproducibility.
