Abstract:
Optical fibres made from polymeric materials can successfully be used instead of those made from glass. The advantages of this kind of materials consist in low cost, better mechanical properties and easy adaptation in various applications for telecommunication systems. The fluoropolymer Cytop produced by Asahi Glass Co., which have a graduated refractive index, is used in obtaining optical fibres with very good results. We have also investigated properties of the Kevlar (poly p-phenylene terephtalamide) which is a material with an extraordinary resistance due to the lateral orientation in fibres. We point out the possibility to use photonic crystals, or "holey" fibres from these polymers rather than those previously obtained from glass.
