Abstract:
The aim of this paper is the assessment of the level of air pollution in street canyons. The urban area chosen was from Ploiesti due to the measurement data for pollutants like CO, NO2 and particulate matter (PM10). The OSPM (Operational Street Pollution Model) used in our study is a combined Gaussian plume model (direct contribution from traffic) and a box model (re-circulation contribution). OSPM is a semi-empirical model with a very simplified parameterization of flow and dispersion conditions in a street canyon. A street canyon is a street with continuous buildings of several tall buildings at both sides of the street. The OSPM model requires inputs about street topography, traffic emissions, meteorology and urban background concentrations. The mean daily concentration values obtained for three large streets are at standard limits for CO and PM10 but exceed the upper standard limit for NOx. The study shows that the traffic is responsible for this increase of air pollution.
