Abstract:
The aim of this study is to investigate the dependence of circulation type classifications and surface climate parameters (temperature and precipitation) for different sizes of spatial domain. Two automated circulation type classifications named GrossWetter-Typen (GWT) and WetterLargenKlassifikation (WLK) developed in COST733 Action are used. This catalogues are run off for three spatial domains with different size centered over Romania. The daily gridded data sets used in this study was built up by National Centers for Environmental Prediction and National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR). This data consist on seal level pressure (SLP), gepotential height at 925hPa and 500hPa, wind at 700hPa and water content for entire atmosphere. The data spatial resolution is 2.5x2.5 degrees lat/lon. The daily observational data obtained from European Climate Assessment & Dataset (ECA&D) are also used. The study is made for a period of 50 years, during 1961-2010. In order to determine the optimal domain size for each climatologically parameters the F-Test Two-Sample for variance is applied. Preliminary results indicate that the optimal domain size, centered over Romania, for circulation type classification is smaller for precipitation than for temperature.
