Abstract: Fog is a weather phenomenon that causes a reduction in visibility, a real obstacle for land, air and sea traffic and has a high economical impact. Considering this, more knowledge about the processes that lead to occurrence, persistence and dissipation of fog is strongly needed. The purpose of this paper is to study temperature and humidity vertical profiles in order to detect fog types using two remote sensing equipments that provide continuous measurements. Data regarding fog evolution emphasized by a Vaisala CL31 Ceilometer together with temperature and humidity profiles provided by a ground based Microwave Radiometer HATPRO for the atmospheric layer (0-10 km) were used. The above mentioned data were completed with atmospheric radiosounding data. For a better understanding of the fog episodes, mean sea level pressure (MSLP) and geopotential patterns were used as additional information. The study focused on November 2012, a period which was characterized by several fog events, for Magurele location (44.35 N, 26.03 E). Results show that the simultaneous use of remote sensing equipments, radiosounding data and meteorological conditions are suitable tools for determining the fog type and also it’s occurrence and dissipation.
