Abstract:
Carbon xerogels are commonly synthesized via sol-gel polymerization of resorcinol with formaldehyde in the presence of an acid or basic catalysts. This study reports a variation on the classical method for carbon xerogel synthesis, where the xerogel cross-linking process is performed in a centrifugal field, resulting in monolithic cylindrical configurations. We synthesize resorcinol-formaldehyde xerogels (RF) by sol-gel polycondensation of resorcinol with formaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalist (graphene oxide - GO or 4-hydroxybenzenesulfonic acid) in centrifugal fields of various magnitudes (125G/75G/37.5G). The pyrolisis step is performed at 900 °C (the incorporated GO is reduced to graphene). For comparison, we synthesize the same RF xerogels without centrifugation, so we can investigate the effects of the process on the electrochemical and physicochemical properties (i.e. density, mechanical strength, porous structure and specific surface area) of RF. This method allows for the control of RF xerogel properties for applications of interest: electrodes for supercapacitors and for batteries, gas diffusion layers in fuel cells.
