Abstract: Scientix portal, www.scientix.eu, is a community that promotes collaboration at European level targeting STEM (science, engineering, math,) teachers by highlighting the opportunities offered to all educational actors involved. Launched in May 2010 by the European Commission, the Scientix project offers a web portal aimed by teachers, researchers, policy makers, parents and any other people interested in the teaching and learning of STEM disciplines. It provides access to materials, research results and European educational policy documents on education projects in mathematics and science funded by the European Union and by various national initiatives. The platform facilitates regular dissemination and sharing of news, know-how and best practices in science education across the European Union. Scientix is operated by European Schoolnet (www.europeanschoolnet.org ) on behalf of the European Commission and is funded by the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development of the European Union. The project’s philosophy can be summed up by the following keywords: "search", "find" and "engage". This motto emphasizes the shift from a portal where information is disseminated to end users (or passive users) to a dynamic, user-centered platform. Scientix therefore should not be seen simply as an information tool, but rather as a collaborative platform.
For STEM teachers it is very important to find tools to be used in a collaborative environment, new strategies for teaching based on constructivism , ideas for science projects as to make science more attractive for students.
However, Scientix is not just a website! More events, online courses and workshops have been and will continue to be organized in the coming years. The main event so far has been Scientix conference, which was held from May 6 to 8, 2011, and was aimed at linking online communities in science and education.
