Abstract:
Sodium alginate is a biopolymer used in the biomedical, food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. Despite the extensive investigation some fundamental questions concerning the mechanism and features involved in gelation of alginate remained still unresolved. The aim of this study is to investigate the morphology of the low viscosity sodium alginate as a function of sodium alginate concentration and calcium concentration by Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) in the q-interval 0.003 Å−1 < q < 0.5 Å−1. The characterization of the sodium alginate solutions was made by approximating SANS data with a unified exponential/power-law approach. SANS data exhibit a fractal behavior which fractal dimension between 2 and 3 and to analyze the data for the polymer the Beaucage model was applied.
