Abstract:
Although extensively studied, the toxicology of silver and its compounds still it is not known too many details regarding the risk caused by silver in nanoparticles form, both for humans and the environment. It is not known to what degree the silver nanoparticles (NPs) are absorbed in the body or if are absorbed only the silver ions originating in the silver NPs. The absorption of the silver NPs is mainly determined by the size of NPs, their surface hydrophobicity, and the presence or absence of ligands on the nanoparticle surface. Absorption increases with decreasing particle diameter from less than 1 µm, which makes the aggregation of NPs in the gastrointestinal tract (the lumen) to decrease absorption. This study highlights distribution of silver NPs inside the brain after their orally administrated to rats, using darkfield microscopy. We can make a comparison between the distribution of silver NPs in the intestinal system and the distribution of silver NPs inside the rat brain.
