Abstract: We present herein the research results for thin films of aniline and pyrrole achieved by direct current (DC) plasma polymerization. These thin polymer films are afterwards employed for building liquid crystal (LC) electro-optic cells. The purpose of our work is to enhance the anchoring properties of a nematic liquid crystal, by altering the polymer thin film nano-structure. By varying the deposition angle used during the polymerization process, the position of the substrate inside the reactor chamber and the discharge parameters (voltage, current, substrate spin frequency, deposition time, temperature etc), we are able to control the film growth, in order to create finger-like nano-structures where the liquid crystal molecules show particular anchoring properties. Characterization of the polymeric films was achieved by means of optical microscopy, SEM imaging, AFM and FTIR. Electro-optical response was also investigated for LC cells, in order to optimize the plasma deposition parameters.
