Abstract:
The purpose of this paper is to analyze two historical earthquakes occurred in 1892 and 1901 in Bulgaria that had significant effects recorded in our country. To this purpose, we considered first the primary information that was found in the Romanian Meteorological Institute (Hepites, 1894) and the Central Meteorological Institute of Bulgaria (Watzof, 1902) and second any other information collected from different sources (catalogues, etc.). The historical data are critically analyzed and as a main result of our investigation the mapping of intensity distribution for the study earthquakes is obtained. Intensity evaluation was carried out using the MSK-64 scale (Medvedev et al., 1964). In particular, detailed description of damage coming from these documents provides new quantitative information necessary to re-evaluate the historical earthquakes. This study is important for reconsidering the seismic hazard assessment in the Black Sea area and for evaluation of potential impact of tsunami waves on the Romanian Black Sea shore.
