Abstract:
Many recent theoretical studies are devoted to nonlinear Compton scattering (NLCS) - the scattering of intense incident radiation pulse on free electrons. Our work is focused on the polarization properties of the emitted photons. The incident radiation is modeled by a pulsed plane wave. Previous detailed research on this subject was devoted to the monochromatic case. Our investigation is based on the expressions of the Stokes parameters of the emitted photon, that we derive starting from the doubly differential rate of the process. The main purpose of our research is to reveal conditions in which nonlinear effects due to the intensity of the radiation are detectable. Special attention is given to the backward scattering case of interest for the Compton photon sources. Stokes parameters in their dependence on electron energy for different polarization states of the laser are presented as graphs. We perform numerical calculations corresponding to conditions close to those projected for the gamma source of ELI-NP facility. Comparisons are made with the predictions for linear Compton scattering and the results obtained in the monochromatic NLCS.
