Validation of aerodrome forecasts

Abstract:
In order to fulfill the official requirements related to aerodrome forecasts, the authorities providing meteorological information have to control and validate on a continuous basis the aeronautical forecasts, but also to take the necessarily measures so that they are between the established limits. The evaluation of forecasts quality is realized with the goals: i) to fulfill of the performance quality formulated by the Quality Management Systems and ii) to identify the systematic problems related to forecasts' errors. In this study is presented and applied an objective method for analyzing the quality of the aerodrome forecasts for three aerodromes regarding the wind direction and speed at ground level. The forecasts for the beginning of the analyzed time interval are better than that for the end of the period. For all three aerodromes the wind speed forecast is good for 80% of the cases, for the whole time interval, of 24 hours.
