Abstract:
Novel gas diffusion layer containing carbon paper infused with carbon xerogels, as an alternative to carbon paper and microporos substrate, have been tested in proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Xerogel synthesis inside the carbon paper pores requires the catalytic polycondensation of resorcinol and formaldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst in a centrifugal field at: 250G, 125G, 65G and 0G, followed by aging treatment and pyrolysis at high temperatures. Platinum-ink, serving as FC catalyst, is directly sprayed on the xerogel plate and incorporated in the FC assembly by hot-pressing against a Nafion membrane. The integrated PEMFCs present open circuit voltages as high as 0.9V and current densities between 100 and 700mA/cm2 for the given catalyst loading ─ 0.5 mg/cm2 at anode and 1 mg/cm2 at cathode.
