Abstract: If the excitation energy of the 12C* nucleus exceeds a threshold value, it becomes unstable with respect to decay into three á particles. This is a rich domain for physics, starting with astrophysics interest as CNO cycles, formation of clusters, interaction (nuclear as well as electromagnetic), quantum tunneling (three-body centrifugal and Coulomb barrier) or Bose symmetry.
In experiments, we measure the properties of the final state, such as the 3á energies and momentum distributions, but often we are interested in the properties of the initial state. This usually involves (though it does not necessarily require) a detailed understanding of the mechanism by which the initial state transforms into the final state. The spin and parity of the system is “encoded” into the 3á momentum distribution in a way that allows us to determine, or at least constrain it, without a detailed understanding of the decay process. The 3á momentum distribution thus serves as a spectroscopic tool. This role is played by the Dalitz Plot Technique.
In this contribution Dalitz Plot is used for a detailed analysis of the experimental results of carbon decays.
