Abstract:
Highly sensitive underground neutrino experiments or rare event searches for direct observation of WIMP dark matter require precise knowledge of all sources what induce radioactive background in the detector. In this context, the role of neutrons as a source of background has received more attention. The dominant sources of neutrons at large depth underground, where the cosmic rays are reduced significantly, are the reactions induced by alpha particle or muons on light elements and the spontaneous fission, mainly of 238U. For these types of measurements detectors must present some peculiarities: a) they must be passive detectors – in order to have no need of associated electronics; b) long time stability; c) able to discriminate between different particles and energies, d) the sensitivity of the response for a large energy range; e) to be cheap. In this contribution some aspects related to the effective sources of neutrons in radioactive background are discussed and two type of passive detectors: droplet detectors and TASTRAK detectors (as plastic SSND) are investigated for their capability to measure neutrons. The preliminary results reported here positively confirm the developed detecting technique.
