Abstract:
Hydrogen is the most present element in the Universe, and, at the same time, it is the element having the biggest energy per mass unit. A fuel cell converts hydrogen, or hydrogen-containing fuels, directly into electrical energy plus heat through the electrochemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen into water. This paper presents after a brief description of the main principles at the base of the fuel cells and a brief history of their development, some considerations on the estimation of such a system’s efficiency, followed by some proposals regarding the efficient use of hydrogen as a fuel and regarding of possible future research development.
