Abstract: There has been a great deal of interest in camelina (Camelina sativa L. Crantz) in recent years due to its unique fatty acid composition, short growth cycle (85-100 days) and ability to grow on marginal land. This makes it an oil-crop of particular interest for the health sector (high content of Omega-3), but also in transportation as biodiesel since it doesn’t necessarily offset food crops. In the study, we assessed the viability of growing camelina in Romania as a biodiesel feedstock. Camelina seeds were pressed, and the resulting oil transesterified using one-step base catalysis, with KOH as the catalyst. GC-MS readings show a high ester yield, and fuel properties were comparable to regular diesel or rape-seed biodiesel. A life cycle assessment was also performed to assess the environmental impact and resource consumption of producing 1MJ of camelina biodiesel, then compared to various scenarios including conventional biodiesel and rape-seed biodiesel.
