Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to improve the QPE (quantitative precipitation estimation) by means of adjusting the mean field bias using weather station measurements. A single polarization S-band Doppler radar, WSR-98D (Weather Surveillance Radar – 98 Doppler), located in the central part of Romania, is used in this study, and daily accumulated precipitation are measured in a network consisting of 27 rain gauges within synoptic weather stations, belonging to Romanian National Meteorological Administration. In order to achieve this, the reflectivity data are transformed into rain-rate by using the Z-R relation. In the next step it was investigated the differences between gauge data and radar data by using four objective functions, the ratio between gauge data and radar data, the Root Mean Square Factor (RMSF), and Spearman and Pearson correlation coefficients. The results are consistent with those reported in previous studies, showing that the differences and correlations between rain gauge and radar data amounts have rather local significance over the studied area than general relevance.
