Abstract:
Romania is one of the European countries most affected by earthquakes and our authorities don’t have implemented a national program regarding seismic education of citizens. Introducing seismology in schools curriculum and educating children using accessible educational materials, proper tools and excellent resources for classroom-based experiments can improve the Romanian society to understands the earthquake threat, how to behave during earthquakes to minimize personal risk and how to secure home, school or/and work environments to minimize injuries, deaths and economic losses from strong earthquakes. Romanian Educational Seismic Network (ROEDUSEIS) is an innovative educational project aiming, among other objectives, to contribute to science literacy and science education at all levels (K-12, undergraduate, graduate and public) using seismology as a vehicle for scientific learning and awareness of earthquake risk. Educational seismometers installed in 9 pilot schools and 2 seismo-laboratories contribute with data for seismic monitoring, physics lessons and research. Some schools already have implemented an optional curriculum using the educational materials developed in this educational project. Teachers and students from participating schools have published articles in school journals and participated on local/ national competitions with various topics from ROEDUSEIS project. ROEDUSEIS consortium has organized a series of workshops where were invited trainer teachers for geosciences from abroad. On these workshops teachers from the pilot schools have become students and aware of practical examples and suggestions on teaching geosciences methodology based on the concept “learning by doing”.
