Abstract: The paper intends to present a comparative analysis of the renewable energy sources as by the 2050 one third of the energy needed worldwide should be produced from solar, wind and other renewable energy sources. Fossil-based fuels (oil, coal, and natural gas) provide today about 85% of all the energy used worldwide. Energy production from fossil fuels generates emissions which affect the environment and may be causing the climate change. In contrast, renewable energy (RE) resources are replenished naturally, never exhausted and their use has a reduced environmental impact than the conventional fuels. Renewable energy is derived from various natural processes, such as the Sun's electromagnetic radiation, tides or heat generation within the Earth and includes: sunlight , wind, biomass, earth's internal heat , water, nuclear energy (there are some problems on classification of nuclear power and it was usually excluded from the list of renewable till recently). A complex comparative analysis of RE, with the underlining of benefits as well as of the technical, economic and social problems, will contribute to the better understanding of the RE role and perspectives as well as of the limitations of each source of energy. The aim of the study is also to contribute to a more balanced approach of the role, benefits and limitations of RE in the future sustainable development of the society.
