Abstract:
The paper presents the results obtained in FEM analysis of light propagation along a commercial single mode (SM) optical fiber in which holes with axis perpendicular to fiber optic axis were laser drilled. The FEM analysis is aiming to investigate the possibilities of using such SM optical fibers with transverse holes as chemical and biological sensors for scientific research, special (security), industrial and medical applications. The SM optical fiber with transverse holes structure is comparable with optical micro/nano fiber (OMF). In this sense, a procedure of solving the Helmholtz equation of electromagnetic field propagation along the optical fiber is developed. The solving procedure aims to define the transmission coefficient of optical fiber with transverse holes variation versus wavelength. The shape of the transverse hole is considered. The role of the optical fiber environment refractive index is analyzed using the simulation model based on this solving procedure.
