Abstract:
We study in the framework of quantum electrodynamics the scattering of a plane wave laser pulse of finite duration on free electrons. We show that in the low intensity limit the transition amplitude can be written as the sum of two terms, each formally identical to the transition amplitude of the Compton scattering valid in the monochromatic linear approximation. We derive a formalism for calculation of the Stokes parameters of the emitted radiation, and present a generalization of the formulas valid in the monochromatic case. We illustrate our calculation with a numerical study of the effects of the electromagnetic pulse duration on the polarization properties of the emitted photons.
