Abstract:
Semi-crystalline polymers are one of the most widely used classes of materials. The mechanical, thermal, electrical and optical, properties are very much dependent upon level of crystallinity achieved by the material during crystallization. The phase transformations involving nucleation and growth of the crystalline polymers is described by the well-known Johnson–Mehl–Avrami (JMA) equation. This equation provides an expression for the volume fraction of material transformed as a function of time. Irrespective of the nucleation mechanism, in the mathematical expression of the JMA equation, the geometry of the space is comprised. We studied the influence of the space geometry on the growth of the crystalline domains by means of the Monte Carlo simulations. We obtained a very good agreement between the crystallization rate constant and the Avrami index predicted by theory of the sporadic and instantaneous nucleation and those obtained from simulations.
