Abstract:
Alginic acid sodium salt or sodium alginate is an anionic polysaccharide distributed widely in the cell walls of brown algae. It is used in the biomedical, food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries as solution property modifiers and gelling agents. Sodium alginate fractions were investigated in aqueous solution over a q range of 0.003 Å−1 - 0.5 Å−1 using Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS). We aimed the investigation of the low viscosity sodium alginate and very low viscosity sodium alginate morphology as a function of sodium alginate concentration. To analyze the SANS data the Beaucage model was applied. It was shown that the SANS data have a fractal behaviour and the fitting parameters are dependend by viscosity and concentration of sodium alginate.
