Abstract: In this study the possible long-term effects of solar variability over the mid-latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, found in annual means of temperature data from NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis database are discussed. For comparison we also used ERA-40 (ECMWF) and observation (ECA&D) time series. The reanalyzed time series have been compared with each other and with the observed ones for different locations over the temperate zone (35 – 65° band) of the Northern Hemisphere. The similarities and differences are discussed. In order to infer the effects of solar variability on temperature, data have been processed to obtain signals at the 11-year and at the 22-year solar cycle timescales. The connection between solar/geomagnetic variability, described by solar and geomagnetic indices (the sunspot number R and, respectively the Raa geomagnetic index) and reanalyzed temperature data is investigated by correlation maps at the scale of northern temperate climate area.
