Abstract:
Wind speed interpolation predicts values of a cell in a raster using the measured values from nearby meteorological stations. To compare the suitable method of interpolation for estimating the wind speed in Romania three spatial interpolation technique Inverse distance technique (IDW), Radial Basis Function (RBF) and Ordinary Kriging were compared using wind speed data over Romania for the period 1961 – 2010. Then the IDW method was compared with Wieringa 1986 model for the period 2003 – 2012. The purpose of this study is to find an adequate method of producing interpolated maps of the yearly and monthly climate normal of surface wind speed at all grid points in Romania. This paper presents the wind data analysis for yearly and monthly mean values of wind speed of NMA (Meteo Romania), measured at standard height of 10 m from different meteorological sites and offering a good spatial coverage over Romania. Our results show that the method involving the planetary boundary layer (Wieringa 1986) better reveals the regional patterns and orographic influence on wind speed.
