Abstract: Live time of SWCNT is assumed as the time interval from staring the carbon nanotube deformation up to the onset of its failure. Atomistic models calculation based on molecular dynamics was used for simulating elastic - plastic to flow deformation of (5,5) armchair SWCNT built by a large number of atoms (2000-6000) . The external force acting at one end of the carbon nanotube with the other one fixed, correspond to constant rate of deformation applied up to nanotube failure. In this study we calculated the time interval required for the onset of SWCNT fragmentation versus the stretching rate. This dependency shows a decreasing behavior in steps of the deformed nano-tube life time as the elongation rate is increasing. It was found that each step corresponds to the transition of the initial fracturing site between the ends of SWCNT. The atomistic model calculations shows that this behavior takes place if the ratio between the propagation velocity of the deformation wave to the stretching rate is greater than 0.02 A/ps.
