Abstract: One of the most important aspects related to the presence of nuclear facilities is their impact on the environment near them. This issue is particularly important for nuclear power plants where their operations are strictly regulated through the legislation. A well established background radiation assessment is also important for incident/accident cases when a correct assessment of the effluents have to be performed.
Within this work, the authors estimated the environmental dose using two distinct TL detector types for the region surrounding CNE Cernavoda (30 km outside the exclusion area). The TL detectors have been employed for 4 months, in similar locations and conditions ensuring a proper estimation for the environment dose rate.
In order to increase the confidence level of our determination, two sets of detectors have been irradiated in the same conditions using a specialized setup allowing the authors to determine the correlation factor between th two detector types.
Our analysis showed that there is no dependance between the dose rate and the distance to the Cernavoda NPP concluding that , under normal operations, the environmental impact of the NPP is less than the detection lower limit of our specialized, low level environmental radiation detectors.
