Abstract:
Particles Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) non-destructive analytical technique was applied to investigate elemental signatures in nuclear fuel cycle uranium samples of different enrichments and origins. The samples were irradiated with 3 MeV protons at the 3 MV Tandetron charged particles accelerator of IFIN-HH. Geometrical characteristics of the analysed samples were not suitable for the sample holder installed in the Ion Beam Analysis (IBA) vacuum chamber; therefore, an external beam set-up was employed. The X-rays were registered using Si-PIN detector, while GUPIX software was used for the analysis of the obtained spectra. The concentrations of minor and trace elements (chemical impurities) present in the studied samples proved to be of the high interest for nuclear forensic investigations. Combining this information with previously obtained by gamma spectrometry data (isotopic composition, age, neutron irradiation traces), it could be possible to determine the nuclear material’s origin, the illegal path and the point of loss of last authorised control.
