Abstract:
The paper present an innovative building idea based on unusual ecological materials as hemp and lime, and new approach for architecture, thermal properties and environmental impact. The introduction presents the general framework of classical and modern construction eco materials and underlines the special characteristics of hempcrete, a new old construction material made by hemp hurds combined with lime to form a concrete. The paper evaluates hemp and lime as building materials, in use, and covers the properties of lime, characteristics of hemp and lime construction, thermal performance, costs, building issues, and hempcrete CO2 emissions and potential market. A detailed methodology of thermal conductivity evaluation of hempcrete as building raw material is also included in this paper. As a “Case study” it is presented a specific situation of a traditional Romanian house, to be made by hempcrete and built in the proximity of Bucharest-Magurele. The walls are also breathable, which controls moisture and condensation and improves internal air quality. The thermal performance of the hemp, the acoustic, the permeability are comparable with other construction materials, but the environmental impact is lower, are the main conclusions of the paper.
