Abstract:
All types of organizations are more and more concerned to achieve and demonstrate clear environmental performance by controlling the impact of their activities, products and services over the environment, and taking into account environmental policy and objectives. These issues fall within the context of the increasingly stringent laws, of economic development policies and other measures meant to encourage the protection of the environment and the society as a whole, regarding the environmental related problems. The organizations have become aware of the fact that they must pay close attention to the management of their activities impacts on the environment. For this purpose, complying with national and international regulations on environmental protection has led these organizations to implement functional and efficient systems of environmental management, and recurring audits over their activities in terms of compliance and respecting pollution limits, which became a fundamental tool for managers[1]. One effective tool to assess and demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of an organization in protection concerns is represented by the environmental audit. The variety of environmental auditing, combined with the expertise and competence of the personnel involved in this activity (auditors and experts), and also the existence of the specific procedures and regulations very well developed in this field, have turned environmental audit into an extremely useful tool to all those interested in the environment performance of their own company or of their business partners'. Major property transfers, major investment projects, soliciting financial credits grants from insurers’ perspective, all are based on the evaluation of the company’s past, present and future environmental performance. And environmental audit represents, along with the environmental report and environmental impact assessment, the main tools for achieving this.
