Abstract: Microbial Fuel Cells (MFC) are biochemical devices utilizing certain species of bacteria known to release electrons as part of their metabolic processes in order to convert chemical energy to electrical energy. The same behavior has as a side effect the direct dependence between the output parameters of the device and the environmental conditions it resides in. Recent studies have proven that useful metabolic processes occur exclusively in the first few layers of microorganisms, usually 15 to 20 micrometers thick, suggesting the design of a MFC as a natural improvement over the existing approaches with different materials influences environmental quality sensors. This paper proposes means of building a monocameral ceramic MFC that will be tested in lake of Botanical Garden. We want to test the differences between the ordinary materials used in MFC and the ceramic MFC.
The ceramic MFC has a water quality monitoring kit that records and processes water pH, ORP, dissolved oxygen and fresh water electrical conductivity to monitor and check the MFC electrical parameters: open circuit voltage and internal resistance and their variation with time under precisely calibrated loads.
